Cumbrian inspired art exhibition featuring local artists and schoolchildren to open in Hawkshead.
Head to Hawkshead to catch a new exhibition of Cumbrian inspired art by local artists and schoolchildren, starting Friday 23 August and running until Sunday 29 September 2024.
As part of a broader programme of art events in Hawkshead, the National Trust will be facilitating the exhibition of local artists this summer, with the theme of Wilder Lakes.
The exhibition will be held in the Main Street Studio, formerly the Beatrix Potter Gallery, in Hawkshead. The exhibition will be open on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays for six weeks, 10am to 4pm.
This unique exhibition draws on the legacy of Beatrix Potter as an extraordinary artist and conservationist. The exhibition features local artists, who live and work in rural Cumbria and showcases artwork that celebrates the elemental rawness, delicacy, and beauty of the Lakes. The artists in residence are wildlife artist Rachel Singleton, wool canvas artist Jane Exley and landscape artist Joy Grindrod.
The project explores what it means to be a steward and custodian of these wild places.
The art exhibition will also feature artwork from children at Hawkshead and Coniston schools based on the theme Wilder Lakes.
Rachel Singleton, one of the exhibition artists said:
I am delighted to participate in this exciting new community art exhibition, I hope that the exquisite artwork on display will inspire and connect visitors to the fragility of the wild and rugged Lakeland environment.
Laura Ruxton, National Trust, General Manager for the South Lakes, said:
Beatrix Potter’s legacy continues to shape this landscape and inspire so many. The National Trust is delighted to showcase in Hawkshead, the work of these local artists and see the creative collaboration with the local schools.
