AGM of The Beatrix Potter Society 2024 was held via Zoom and in-person at the V&A on 23 March, 2024. The AGM included reports from key volunteers and our Financial Examiner.

Recently, a training session was held at Hill Top

Recently, a training session was held at Hill Top for volunteers interested in doing ‘Conservation in Action’ demonstrations for visitors this summer. Volunteers learned how conservators approach the wet cleaning of very old glazed ceramics. They practiced on a large platter that is displayed in the parlour bookcase at Hill Top.

The two main ingredients used are de-ionised water and synparonic A7, a specially formulated washing liquid used by conservators. The results were amazing! Before they began cleaning the platter, it looked quite clean. But when they gently rubbed the surface with white cotton swabs dipped in synparonic A7, the platter immediately became brighter - and their white cotton swabs turned rather grey. As the photo shows, they divided the platter in sections to ensure that all areas were evenly cleaned.

Please do not think that because our swabs turned grey, cleaning is at all neglected at Hill Top, as this is far from true! Handling of old ceramics is best kept to a minimum, especially when cracks and fine lines exist in the glazing. Gilt edging and any repaired areas are best left untouched. Occasional light dusting with super soft brushes is generally adequate, with wet washing recommended just once every two or three years. The adage ‘do no harm’ comes to mind!

It’s all about ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy seeing ceramic objects that were treasured by Beatrix Potter.

It has been 40 years since M&S first began selling

It has been 40 years since M&S first began selling Beatrix Potter merchandise and the M&S Archive is celebrating with a special opportunity to view the collection. This is a rare opportunity to see M&S merchandise featuring the famous illustrations that helped to make Peter Rabbit and his friends such enduring favourites.

The collection will be available to view in the M&S Archive Reading Room from Monday 3 June to Friday 7 June, from 10am to 4pm, no appointment needed.
