The design is based on an original watercolour of the mouse  in The Story of Miss Moppet (1906).  It appeared on the title page of the first panoramic edition (in sepia) but not in the later book editions, and is annotated in pencil by Beatrix Potter.  In 2005 it was in the Beatrix Potter Collection of the late John R Cawood, and was reproduced with his permission (© Frederick Warne & Co. 2005).
